Cosmoscope is a proposal to provide a non-profit online observatory for general audiences providing public access to live images of the night sky through cutting-edge digital technology. The logo and name pay homage to Carl Sagan’s remarkable lifelong outreach and in particular his groundbreaking work on public television, just as the name of the nearby Kansas Cosmosphere drew inspiration from this same source.
Cosmoscope developers propose to provide to the facility state-of-the-art video displays and internet-enabled computers to partner with the Lake Afton Public Observatory and other observatories worldwide offering telescope control and imaging resources.
The extent of these offerings is scalable, beginning with an institutional membership to Slooh with archival imagery provided by the Hubble Heritage Project and NASA. Budgetarily within reach is a Cosmoscope-owned remotely controlled observatory in a selected “dark sky” location a short drive of the Cosmosphere to facilitate regular maintenance.
